The basics

What Is a Balloon Wall?

A balloon wall is a flat, solid field of balloons, usually 6 to 10 feet across, that serves as a backdrop.

An arch frames a doorway and a garland follows a line, but a balloon wall covers the entire surface. We build it on its own frame or grid, so it can stand in front of any wall in the room and do the job of a photo backdrop, the back of a stage, the wall behind the cake or a branded step-and-repeat at a company event.

Square foot for square foot, nothing in balloon decor makes a bigger statement. Walls work for birthdays, weddings, grad parties, gender reveals, holiday parties and corporate events, and because the balloons leave no gaps, the busy room behind never sneaks into the picture.

Wall styles

Types of Balloon Walls We Build

There are five main ways to build a balloon wall, and each looks and prices differently.

Organic balloon walls

On an organic wall, balloons of many sizes are layered across the whole face for a soft, cloudy texture. It's the richest-looking option and the one couples and shower hosts tend to choose. Since it takes the most balloons, it sits at the top of our price list.

Grid and link balloon walls

A grid wall, which you'll also hear called a quick link wall or link balloon wall, is made from special linking balloons tied into a net, so every balloon lines up in a row. That order lets you play with patterns: a checkerboard, a heart, stripes or a big number. It's sharp, graphic and perfect for brand and team colors.

Framed balloon walls

Here the balloons fill a shaped frame: a rectangle, a round ring or a tall arch-top chiara. The shape carries the style. Arch-top frames feel elegant, squares feel modern and rings feel playful.

Foil and mylar balloon walls

A foil wall is made from mylar shapes like hearts, stars or squares in metallic finishes. It throws light around, looks great on camera and contains no latex, which is important for anyone with a latex allergy and for the hospitals, schools and venues that don't allow it.

Floating and lighted balloon walls

A floating wall is a grid of helium balloons on ribbons, tied down row by row so it sways a little. It's eye-catching but only lasts a few hours. A lighted wall threads warm LED strings or light-up balloons through the build, which is lovely for evening parties and New Year's Eve.

Uses

Ways to Use a Balloon Wall

A wall pulls its weight because it covers several jobs at once.

Photo wall

The selfie and group-shot spot. Hang a neon sign or a vinyl name on it and there will be a line.

Behind the cake

A wall behind the dessert table keeps the photos clean and hides the kitchen, the bar or the clutter behind it.

Stage and head table

A backing for speeches, bands, DJs, award presentations and the wedding party's table.

Branded step-and-repeat

A grid wall in company colors with a logo panel, made for product launches, galas and the brand pop-ups that fill Austin every March during SXSW.

Room divider

Screens off a catering station, a bar setup or a storage corner in a rented hall or an open warehouse space.

Gender reveal

A neutral wall with a hidden pop panel, or one that turns pink or blue from the reveal side.

Occasions

Balloon Walls for Birthdays, Weddings, Graduations and Holidays

These are the events that call for a balloon wall most often.

  • Birthdays: walls for kids' parties and for 18th, 21st and 30th birthdays, often with the age or a name built in.
  • Weddings and bridal showers: white, ivory and blush organic walls behind the sweetheart table or at the door of a Hill Country reception.
  • Graduations and prom: grid walls in school colors with the class year for late-May grad parties, and glam walls for prom pictures.
  • Gender reveals and baby showers: neutral walls with a reveal built in, and pastel walls for showers.
  • Valentine's Day: foil heart walls in red, pink and rose gold.
  • Christmas and New Year's Eve: red, green and gold for the holidays; black, gold and silver chrome for the countdown.
  • Game days: burnt orange and white for Longhorn watch parties, or your own team's colors.
  • Corporate events: branded walls for office openings, galas, conferences and festival-season activations.

Installation

How We Install a Balloon Wall Without Damaging Your Walls

The short version: nothing gets attached to your walls at all.

Each wall we build sits on its own weighted frame. At home, that means no tape or glue dots lifting paint. At downtown hotels and Domain-area ballrooms, where adhesives and nails are usually off-limits, it means we're within the rules. And in rustic Hill Country barns, where the walls are wood or stone, a freestanding frame is the only practical option anyway. If the layout shifts on the day, we can slide the whole wall a few feet.

  1. 1

    Measure

We check the wall size, the ceiling, the nearest outlet for lights and the route from the door, elevator or gravel lot to the spot.

  2. 2

    Build

Bigger walls go up in panels that are joined on-site and fluffed until you can't see the seams.

  3. 3

    Finish

Signs, vinyl, foils and lights go on last, and then we look at it from where the photos will actually be taken.

What's the best way to hang balloons on a wall? Don't hang them on the wall. Stand them on a frame in front of it. If you must attach balloons directly, use removable hooks with fishing line instead of tape, and test the hook somewhere out of sight first.

Longevity

How Long Do Balloon Walls Last?

Air-filled walls last several days inside. Helium floating walls last a matter of hours.

In an air-conditioned room, an air-filled organic or grid wall holds its shape for several days and often close to a week, and foil walls go longer still. Floating helium walls begin to sag within hours. Outdoors during an Austin summer, keep the wall in the shade of a pavilion or covered patio and build it the day of; strong sun and triple-digit heat cloud and pop latex fast.

Questions

Balloon Walls in Austin: FAQ

What is a balloon wall?

A freestanding, solid surface of balloons, usually 6 to 10 feet wide, used as a photo backdrop, a stage backing or the wall behind a dessert table. Walls can be organic, grid-style, framed or made from foil balloons.

How much does a balloon wall cost?

Our foil walls start at $105 for 8×5 ft, grid walls at $385, and organic balloon walls at $550 for 8×8 ft. The size, style and extras set the final price.

How long do balloon walls last?

Several days indoors when air-filled, often about a week. Foil walls last longer. Floating helium walls last a few hours, and walls left in direct Austin summer sun only last hours too.

What size balloon wall do I need?

8×8 ft is the most popular and fits a group photo or a cake table. 6×6 ft works for small rooms and couples, and 8×10 ft or custom widths work for stages and head tables.

Will a balloon wall damage my walls?

No. Our walls stand on weighted frames in front of your wall, so tape, nails and glue never touch the paint.

What is it called when balloons are linked into a wall?

A grid wall or link wall. It's made from linking balloons tied into a net, which lets you build rows, patterns, numbers and logos.

Can a balloon wall be latex-free?

Yes. A foil (mylar) balloon wall has no latex, so it's the right choice for guests with allergies and venues that ban latex.

Can a balloon wall go outside?

It can, in shade and with a heavier base. Walls catch wind like a sail, so lakeside and rooftop setups get extra weight and tie-offs, and summer outdoor walls are built the same day.
