The basics
What Is a Balloon Backdrop?
It's a solid background plus balloons, which turns a bare wall into a photo spot with some personality.
Every balloon backdrop has two layers. The first is the surface: a printed or painted panel, a shimmer wall, a flower wall, a grass wall or fabric drape. The second is a balloon garland curving over or around it. The surface gives the camera a clean field of color, and the balloons add shape, depth and the party's palette. Put a neon sign, a vinyl name or marquee numbers on it, and it becomes the part of the room everyone is drawn to.
Arches and backdrops are a natural pair: an arch or a garland in front to frame, a backdrop behind to fill. If you'd like the entire surface covered in balloons with no panel showing, that's a balloon wall instead.
Backdrop styles
Balloon Backdrop Styles
The shape of the backdrop sets the tone before a single balloon is added.
Round backdrops and balloon hoops
A circular panel with a garland swooping across one side is the backdrop birthday and shower hosts book most. A balloon hoop is the open-ring version, wrapped partway with balloons and flowers, often with a neon sign hung in the center. Hoops are lovely at weddings and engagement parties because the venue, whether that's live oaks or a limestone wall, stays visible through the middle.
Chiara (arched) backdrops
Chiara backdrops are tall, arch-topped panels that stand alone or in groups of two or three at staggered heights. They look refined and current, and they give a garland a graceful edge to follow. Set a second chiara at an angle and the pair wraps around the cake table.
Square and panel backdrops
A square backdrop is a rectangular panel or frame, usually with a garland climbing one side and running across the top. A panel trio, three panels side by side in different heights or colors, covers the full length of a long dessert table.
Shimmer walls with balloons
A shimmer wall, also called a sequin wall, is covered in little metallic squares that flutter and catch every bit of light. Add a garland in matching or contrasting colors and it practically glows in photos, especially at night parties under string lights.
Flower, greenery and grass wall backdrops
Silk rose and hydrangea walls, greenery walls and boxwood-style grass walls give a soft, garden feel that fits right in at a Hill Country brunch or a backyard bridal shower. A balloon garland across a flower wall is a favorite for showers, Mother's Day and baptisms.
Draped and curtain backdrops
Fabric drape gives a wide, soft background for weddings, galas and school events. Run warm lights behind sheer panels and the whole backdrop glows once the sun goes down.
Balloon arch backdrops and photo booths
A balloon arch photo backdrop stands an arch in front of a solid board, or builds the arch right into it. It also makes a ready-made photo booth backdrop: put a ring light or a booth in front and the setup shows up in every frame.

Add-ons
Backdrop Add-Ons: Neon Signs, Marquee Letters, Names and Pedestals
The extras are what make a backdrop feel personal, and what people remember from the photos.
Neon signs
"Happy Birthday", "Oh Baby", "Cheers" and "Better Together" signs, or a custom sign with a name.
Custom vinyl
A name, an age, a date or a monogram cut in your color and applied to the panel.
Marquee letters and numbers
Light-up letters and numbers, 3 to 4 feet tall, set in front of the backdrop and often wrapped in garland.
Pedestals and cake stands
Cylinders and plinths at different heights for the cake, cupcakes, favors and gifts.
Balloon columns
A balloon column on each side to widen the setup and add height.
Floor clusters and bubbles
Balloon clusters and clear bubble balloons at the base to ground the whole scene.
Sizing
Balloon Backdrop Sizes: How Much Space You Need
Most backdrops run 6 to 8 feet wide. Leave room in front for the table and the person holding the phone.
| Backdrop | Size | Floor space to plan |
|---|---|---|
| One round or chiara panel | 6–7.5 ft tall | About 8 ft wide and 6 ft deep |
| Shimmer wall | 4×7 to 8×8 ft | Its width plus 2 ft per side for the garland |
| Panel trio | Roughly 8–10 ft wide | About 12 ft wide and 7 ft deep |
| 10×10 ft backdrop | 10 ft wide, 10 ft tall | About 12 ft wide; check the ceiling first |
A 10×10 ft backdrop is ten feet in each direction and needs a ceiling around 11 feet or higher. That suits barns, ballrooms, warehouse venues and outdoor setups better than most living rooms.

Occasions
Balloon Backdrops for Graduations, Birthdays, Weddings and Holidays
The backdrop is usually the main photo spot, so we plan it around the person being celebrated.
- Graduation backdrops: school colors, the class year in marquee numbers and the grad's photo on an easel, for the late-May and December commencement rush.
- Birthday backdrops: first birthdays, 21sts and 50ths, character themes for kids and glam setups for adults.
- Wedding, engagement and bridal shower backdrops: hoops, chiara trios and flower walls in white, nude and blush, right at home at Dripping Springs ranch and winery venues.
- Gender reveal and sprinkle backdrops: neutral setups with a reveal moment, or pastel ones for showers.
- Baptism and christening backdrops: white, ivory and soft blue or pink, finished with flowers.
- Sweet 16 and quinceañera backdrops: chrome, crowns and her name lit up, made for glam photos.
- Holiday backdrops: Christmas and winter wonderland, Halloween, Día de los Muertos, Valentine's Day, Easter, Mother's Day and Thanksgiving.
Planning
Tips for a Backdrop That Photographs Well
Where you put the backdrop matters more than which backdrop you pick.
- Keep it away from windows. In lake houses and hillside homes with big west-facing glass, a backdrop in front of the view turns everyone into a silhouette. Choose a solid wall.
- Light the front. A ring light or a lamp facing the backdrop beats any overhead fixture.
- Give it room. Leave 5 to 6 feet in front for the table, the guests and whoever is taking the photo.
- Check the ceiling. Measure before you choose a 7 ft chiara or a 10×10 ft backdrop.
- Outdoors, think shade and wind. A backdrop catches wind like a sail. Outdoor setups get weighted bases, sit against a wall or fence when possible, and go under a tree, tent or pavilion during Austin's long summer.

Questions
Balloon Backdrops in Austin: FAQ
How much do balloon backdrops cost?
Backdrop rentals start at $85 for a panel and $125 for a shimmer wall. A styled backdrop with a balloon garland starts at $350, and hoop or A-frame backdrops start at $475. Most full setups fall between $350 and $775.
How much is a balloon arch with a backdrop?
Most of our arch and backdrop combinations cost $450–$775, depending on the garland length, the backdrop surface and extras like a neon sign or marquee numbers.
How big is a 10×10 ft backdrop?
Ten feet wide by ten feet tall. Plan on about 12 feet of wall and a ceiling of roughly 11 feet or more, which suits halls, barns and ballrooms better than most living rooms.
How many balloons are needed for a balloon hoop?
A garland covering a third to half of a 6–7 ft hoop usually takes about 60–120 balloons in mixed sizes. Wrapping the full ring takes more.
Can I rent a backdrop without balloons?
Yes. Shimmer walls, flower walls, grass walls and panels can be rented on their own, and balloons can be added later.
Can a balloon backdrop go outside in Austin?
Yes. Outdoor backdrops get weighted bases, sit against a wall or fence to block wind and go in shade. In summer we build them close to the start time, since direct sun fades and pops balloons within hours.
What can I use instead of a backdrop?
A balloon wall, a large arch in front of a plain wall, fabric drape or a garland over a doorway. Each gives you a photo spot without a separate panel.
Can you add a name or neon sign to the backdrop?
Yes. Vinyl names, ages and dates go right on the panel, and neon signs hang on the backdrop or in the middle of a balloon hoop.
