The basics

Balloon Columns, Towers and Pillars: What They Are

Column, tower, pillar, post: four names for one thing, a stack of balloons built up a pole on a weighted base.

Because a balloon column stands up by itself, usually somewhere between 5 and 8 feet tall, it can go nearly anywhere: on both sides of the front door, at each end of a stage, along a ceremony aisle, at the corners of a dance floor or beside a booth at an expo. Columns are the most adaptable piece of balloon decor we make, and the simplest way to give a room some height without hanging a thing.

They're also the budget-friendly way to mark an entrance. A pair of columns costs less than a full balloon arch, and if you want more later, the two tops can be joined with an arch. That pairing is the time-tested setup for school dances, grand openings and church events.

Column styles

Balloon Column Styles

Every column starts with the same pole and base. The way the balloons are arranged is what sets them apart.

Classic stacked columns

Rings of four balloons packed tight up the pole, in one color or in stripes. Bold, tidy and the lowest-priced column we build.

Spiral balloon columns (2, 3 and 4 colors)

Shift the colors one position in each ring and they wind up the column like a candy stripe. Two colors look clean and graphic, three colors (red, white and blue for the Fourth, or a school's colors plus white) are the ones people ask for most, and four colors are made for rainbow and sports themes.

Organic balloon columns

Mixed sizes in uneven clusters give a column a softer, fuller shape that matches an organic arch or garland. They take more balloons than a classic column and cost more, and they've become the modern pick for weddings and showers.

Themed and novelty columns

A column can turn into a character or an object: a crayon for the first day of school, a cactus for a fiesta, a palm tree for a pool party, a traffic light for a race-car birthday or a snowman for the office holiday party. Themed columns are a playful way to line a school hallway or dress a kids' party.

Toppers

Balloon Columns With Numbers and Toppers

The topper is the piece that makes a column about your event.

  • Number toppers: a 34- or 40-inch foil number for an age, an anniversary or a graduating class. It's the most popular way to finish a column.
  • Stars, hearts and crowns: foil shapes that suit grads, Valentine's parties and quinces.
  • Bubble balloon toppers: a clear bubble filled with confetti or feathers, or personalized with a name.
  • Grad caps and diplomas: made for graduation parties and senior nights.
  • Logo and letter panels: for company events, ribbon cuttings and shop openings.

Sizing

How Tall Are Balloon Columns, and How Many Balloons Do They Need?

A typical balloon column stands about 6 feet tall before the topper goes on.

Column heights and approximate balloon counts
ColumnHeightBalloons (approx.)
Mini or tabletop2–3 ft12–20
Standard classic or spiral5–6 ft40–60 (11-inch)
Tall classic7–8 ft60–80 (11-inch)
Organic5–7 ft60–100+ (mixed sizes)

These counts cover the body of the column. The topper, the base and any clusters at the foot add a few more.

What size balloon for a column? Most columns are built from 11-inch latex balloons in rings of four, which makes a column roughly 18 to 20 inches wide. Organic columns add 5-inch and 16- to 18-inch balloons for depth.

Pricing

How Much Do Balloon Columns Cost in Austin?

A single column usually falls between $85 and $275, depending on the style and the topper.

Classic column$85
Spiral column (2–4 colors)$105
Themed column (graduation, holiday)$140

Prices are per column, delivered and set in place in our core Austin service area. Hill Country venues and drives past 35 miles add a travel fee from $55.

How much do people charge for balloon columns? Since most entrances get two, budget roughly $170 to $550 for a pair, depending on style. A pair costs less than two singles ordered separately, and joining them with an arch costs less than ordering an arch and columns on their own.

Placement

Where Balloon Columns Go

Columns do their best work in pairs, with something between them.

Front doors and entries

On both sides of a front porch, a venue door or a storefront on Burnet Road or South Congress, so nobody has to ask where to go.

Stages and DJ tables

One at each end of the stage or DJ setup puts the speaker, band or DJ in a frame in every picture.

Ceremony aisles

Short columns lining the aisle, or two tall ones where the couple stands, for ranch and garden weddings out in the Hill Country.

Dance floors

Columns at each corner, sometimes linked overhead with a garland to make a canopy.

Booths and lobbies

Brand-color columns make an expo booth or an office lobby easy to spot from across the room.

Gyms and cafeterias

Rows of school-color columns for graduations, prom, homecoming and senior night.

Occasions

Balloon Columns for Graduations, Weddings, Birthdays and Holidays

Columns peak in late May, when grad parties fill every weekend from Georgetown to Kyle, but they suit almost any event.

  • Graduation: columns and towers in school colors with caps, stars or the class year, for grad parties, prom and senior night, including maroon and gold for Texas State grads.
  • Weddings and bridal showers: white and gold or blush organic columns at the ceremony and the reception.
  • Birthdays: a column with the age on top, for first birthdays through 60th birthdays.
  • Gender reveals: pink and blue columns finished with a question-mark topper.
  • Game days: burnt orange and white columns for Longhorn watch parties and tailgates at home.
  • Corporate events and openings: brand-color columns for booths, lobbies and ribbon cuttings.
  • Holidays and quinceañeras: Christmas, Halloween, Valentine's, Easter and Fourth of July columns, plus columns framing the court's entrance at a quince.

Outdoor columns

Outdoor Balloon Columns in Austin Weather

A column is tall, narrow and top-heavy, so outdoor columns get built a little differently.

  • Outdoor columns get heavier bases and are tied to a post, rail or fence whenever one is close by, which matters most on lake-house decks and hilltop lots.
  • Air-filled columns last far longer outside than helium-filled ones.
  • Shade is everything: Austin's summer sun clouds and pops latex within a few hours, and dark colors heat up first.
  • Spring storm season (roughly March through May) brings sudden straight-line gusts, so we watch the forecast and keep a plan to move columns under cover.

Longevity

How Long Will Balloon Columns Last?

Several days indoors. A few hours in full summer sun.

An air-filled column in an air-conditioned room holds up for several days and often about a week. In outdoor shade, plan on about a day. Standing in direct sun on a Central Texas summer afternoon, a column starts to fade and pop within a few hours. For indoor events, columns can be built a day or two early, which makes morning graduations and school events much easier.

Questions

Balloon Columns in Austin: FAQ

How much do people charge for balloon columns?

Our classic columns start at $85 each, spiral columns at $105, organic columns at $165 and towers with a topper at $180. Most entrances use a pair.

How many balloons are in a balloon column?

A classic 5–6 ft column uses roughly 40–60 balloons at 11 inches, a 7–8 ft column takes 60–80, and an organic column takes 60–100 or more in mixed sizes.

What size balloons are used for a balloon column?

Mostly 11-inch latex balloons in rings of four. Organic columns mix in 5-inch and 16–18-inch balloons.

How long will balloon columns last?

Several days indoors when air-filled, about a day in outdoor shade, and only a few hours in direct Austin summer sun.

How far in advance can a balloon column be made?

A day or two ahead for indoor events. Columns for outdoor summer parties should be set up the same day.

What's the difference between a balloon column, a balloon tower and a balloon pillar?

Nothing that matters. All three are a freestanding stack of balloons on a pole and weighted base. People often say "tower" when the column has a big topper.

Can balloon columns have a number on top?

Yes. A 34- or 40-inch foil number is the most popular topper, used for ages, anniversaries and graduation years.

Do balloon columns need helium?

No. Columns are air-filled and held up by the pole and base. Only a floating topper or a bubble balloon might use helium.

Can balloon columns stay up outside in the wind?

Yes, with a heavier base and a tie-off to something solid. Lakeside decks, rooftops and open lawns get extra weight, and we'll suggest a sheltered spot if gusts are in the forecast.
